When Newcastle United and Chelsea square off at St. James’ Park on Saturday afternoon, they’ll be hoping to get back on track and move up the Premier League standings.
With 20 points from 12 games, the Magpies are ranked seventh in the standings, while the Blues are four spots and four points behind in 10th place.
After Bournemouth, the previous team of Eddie Howe, ended Newcastle’s seven-game league unbeaten streak two weeks ago, the team was unable to start the international break on a positive note.
Dominic Solanke’s brace in the second half helped the Magpies defeat the Cherries by the same score, only four days after they lost 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
Newcastle United possible starting lineup:
Pope; Trippier, Lascelles, Schar, Livramento; Longstaff, Guimaraes, Willock; Almiron, Gordon, Joelinton
Chelsea possible starting lineup:
Sanchez; James, Disasi, Silva, Cucurella; Fernandez, Caicedo, Gallagher; Palmer, Jackson, Sterling
We say: Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle United
Chelsea may be in for a tighter matchup versus Newcastle after two wild, goal-filled games against Spurs and Man City. This is because the two teams have only scored two goals or fewer in seven of their past eight meetings.
A win for either team would give them a huge confidence boost before the holidays, but the hosts should be able to secure a share of the spoils in front of an energised St James’ Park if Newcastle is reinforced by a few players returning from injury.
